“So…if you were six instead of eighty-six, what kind of birthday cake would delight you?”
“Oh, I don’t know, just whatever you’d like. Please don’t make a fuss.”
Doesn’t that sound just like a mom?
So it’s up to me–something light, summery, beyond delicious, something absolutely, positively, crazy- good, something utterly June.
I know! That cake my friend Lynn Felton makes, (she’s an awesome artist, look her up!) a Butter Cake with Vanilla-Almond-Buttercream frosting. And I will add a strawberry sauce filling. Yeeeoow!!
She sends me the recipe–and I begin.
Eggs, milk, vanilla, almond, sugar, flour, baking powder, salt and pure, grass-fed, full blown, creamy-dreamy BUTTER! It’s coming together so beautifully, smells so divine..I want to dive in. But I’ll just settle for a taste (or two!).
Next, go to Homestead Farms and pick the strawberries.
Now for the frosting…
BUTTER (same as above), confectioner’s sugar, vanilla, almond and cream!
WARNING–THIS COMBINATION IS SO LUSCIOUSLY MAGNIFICENT THAT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF EATING EVERY BIT OF IT WHILE MIXING IT UP AND NOT HAVING ANY LEFT FOR THE CAKE.
The cake is now put together and ready for decorating. The strawberry sauce has been spread between the layers, but since that wasn’t part of the recipe and I didn’t know what I was doing, it oozed over the edges and got mixed up with the buttercream frosting so that there’s kind of a strawberry swirl thing going on. Awesome.
