It’s February, the month of love, and since I’m a writer I thought it would be fun to explore the concept of book passion. We hear people say it all the time, that they love books and love reading, and given the fact that Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, offers over 8 million titles for sale at our fingertips 24/7, I think it’s safe to say that we are a culture of bibliophiles. Books can capture our most intense feelings for a number of reasons-they may offer us an escape, a return, a fantasy, or anything that brings us into a fuller experience of the depth and breadth of our humanness. When a person says, “I LOVE that book!” it can mean any number of things. So what is it about a particular title that creates that emotional connection? Of course, there are as many answers to that question as there are readers!
In my nearly half century of bibliophilia, there have been many stories that have captured my heart and soul, but one that stands out for me as I write on the theme of passion is “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte. Equal parts love story, ghost story and tale of obsession, it’s an ingenious reflection of the untamed adolescent mind, which is when I first encountered it. Soul mates Cathy and Heathcliff, frolicking in the wilds of the English moors as children, are cruelly separated by the rules of their society and ultimately by death. Heathcliff’s pain at losing his beloved seized me then and has never let go. If I had been Cathy I never, ever would have left him! His wailing for her across the plains haunts me to this day. I am besotted for life.
I have many other examples, including one that I posted on my Facebook Author page this week. I invite you to go there and join this conversation by sharing your “love stories” with the printed word. It doesn’t have to be a great work of literature, a classic, or anything other than one of you greatest reading pleasures. So please click here now to share with us a favorite read and tell us why it has captured your heart. It will be fun to see what everyone says!
